Biography

Dr. Koury was born in rural Arkansas.  He did his undergraduate work at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN and obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.  He completed a general surgery residency at University Hospital/Rutgers University in Newark, NJ.  He went on to obtain advanced training in minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.  He then entered practice as a minimally invasive surgeon and performed a variety of elective an emergent, advanced laparoscopic procedures.  After being in practice for several years, he realized that advances in surgical techniques were rapidly occurring.  It became obvious that in order to keep up with the changing technology and most importantly to provide the best patient care, he needed to subspecialize.  Dr. Koury realized that his true passion was colon and rectal surgery and he was accepted into the Colon and Rectal Surgery fellowship  at Thomas Jefferson University.

After his additional training, he remained in Pennsylvania and worked in private practice.  He missed surgical education and when he was offered a position with UPMC Pinnacle which has a surgical training program, he eagerly took the job.  He is actively involved in teaching and research and has several national publications.  Dr. Koury is also a champion of surgical quality.  He was appointed to and is an active member of the surgical quality committee ensuring the best surgical outcomes at affiliated UPMC central facilities.

As part of UPMC, he has become intensely interested in rectal cancer care and is currently the director of the rectal cancer accreditation program.  By standardizing the care of patients with colorectal cancer, the hope for cure and best outcomes can become reality for patients.  Our institution provides multidisciplinary care for colorectal cancer and we are working toward accreditation for rectal cancer care.
